Following the World Series, Matsui becomes a free agent. The Yankees want to open up the designated hitter spot as a place for resting some of New York’s veteran players like Alex Rodriguez, third baseman, Jorge Posada, catcher, Derek Jeter, shortstop, and Johnny Damon, left fielder and another free agent. On Thursday Damon will turn 36 and Matsui will be 36 next June.
